Intimacy & Depth

The Danger of Shallow Water

· Wahid Moore · The Door Left Unlocked

There’s an ocean inside me but you only see the surface. You think you know me because you can count the ripples on my skin.

But darling, you’ve never even dipped your toes in.

You laugh at the waves I make admire the way the sun glints off my surface.

But you don’t ask about the storms that rage below the shipwrecks of my past or the creatures that swim in the darkness of my depths.

I am drowning in myself while you stand on the shore thinking you’ve seen it all.

How can someone be so shallow when the water runs this deep?

You see a pond calm and unassuming but miss the undercurrents that shape who I am.

There are entire ecosystems within me waiting to be discovered but you’re content with skipping stones.

So I remain an unexplored vastness a mystery wrapped in blue.

Maybe one day you’ll gather the courage to dive to swim through the layers of me to see the coral reefs of my dreams and the abyssal plains of my fears.

Until then, I’ll be here an ocean pretending to be a puddle waiting for someone brave enough to drown in me.
